NASA’s SPHEREx Telescope Launching Aboard SpaceX Falcon 9 to Explore Cosmic Evolution

Image
NASA's latest infrared space telescope, SPHEREx (Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer), is set for launch on 28th February. The mission, valued at $488 million, will take off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket . Designed to scan the entire sky in infrared light, it will collect data from over 450 million galaxies and 100 million stars in the Milky Way. The telescope's observations will focus on regions of the universe that are typically too distant or faint for conventional telescopes. Scientific Objectives According to NASA , the primary aim of SPHEREx is to enhance understanding of cosmic inflation, the rapid expansion of the universe that occurred within the first second following the Big Bang . By mapping the large-scale structure of the cosmos, the telescope will provide insight into how galaxies formed and evolved. Scientists also anticipate that its data will help track...

New Study Suggests Dogs May Have Domesticated Themselves for Food

Image
The origins of dog domestication have been a topic of debate among scientists, with theories suggesting various evolutionary processes led to the transformation of wolves into the domestic dogs seen today. A new study has indicated that early wolves may have chosen to stay near humans due to the availability of food scraps, potentially leading to their domestication over thousands of years. The findings support the idea that self-domestication was possible through natural selection, as wolves that were more tolerant of human presence may have had better access to resources and, in turn, passed on these traits to their offspring. Wolves and Their Path to Domestication According to the study published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, the first phase of dog domestication is believed to have taken place between 30,000 and 15,000 years ago. This period is thought to have been influenced primarily by natural selection rather than human intervention. Researchers suggest that wolves ...

NASA Supercomputer Finds Spiral Structure in the Oort Cloud’s Inner Region

Image
An unexpected spiral structure has been identified at the edge of the solar system, potentially altering current understanding of the Oort Cloud . This discovery has emerged from a computational model developed using data from comets and gravitational influences. The Oort Cloud, a distant shell of icy bodies, has long remained an enigma due to its extreme distance from Earth. The latest findings suggest that its inner regions may form a spiral-like pattern, offering a fresh perspective on the cloud's composition and dynamics. Findings from New Research According to a study published on the preprint server arXiv, the Oort Cloud, previously thought to be a spherical shell of icy debris, may actually exhibit a structure akin to a spiral disk. The research, led by astronomer David Nesvorný and his team at the Southwest Research Institute in Colorado, utilised simulations run on NASA's Pleiades supercomputer to generate a model of the Oort Cloud's inner structure. The findin...

Apple Plans $500 Billion in US Investment, 20,000 Research Jobs in Next Four Years

Image
Apple said on Monday it would spend $500 billion (roughly Rs. 43,61,175 crore) in US investments in the next four years that will include a giant factory in Texas for Artificial Intelligence (AI) servers and add about 20,000 research and development jobs across the country in that time. That $500 billion (roughly Rs. 43,61,175 crore) in expected spending includes everything from purchases from US suppliers to US filming of television shows and movies for its Apple TV+ service. The company declined to say how much of the figure it was already planning to spend with its US supply base, which includes firms such as Corning that makes glass for iPhones in Kentucky. The move comes after media reports that Apple CEO Tim Cook met President Donald Trump last week. Many of Apple's products that are assembled in China could face 10 percent tariffs imposed by Trump earlier this month, though the iPhone maker had secured some waivers from China tariffs during the first Trump adm...

Vivo V50 Review: Fancy Design Backed by Big Battery Life

Image
Vivo, a brand known mainly for its mid-premium segment smartphones, is seeing increasing competition with every passing year. While it was difficult to find features such as a good camera and battery life in this segment a few years ago, the competition has now caught up. Xiaomi's Redmi Note 14 Pro+ (which was earlier a part of its budget series of devices) is now delivering good value priced from Rs. 30,999. And the same applies to brands like Poco and Realme, which have gotten increasingly aggressive with pricing. With Vivo now fully aware of the competition, inching closer with every passing year, it has now come up with what we believe is a tolerable successor for its mid-range V40 series. The Vivo V50 has plenty of upgrades over the previous models, and for once, some of these actually make sense. Vivo V50 Design: Quad-curved display done right Dimensions - 163.29 x 76.72 x 7.57mm Weight - 199g Durability - IP68 + IP69 Unlike its predecessors, the Vivo V50 has a slim...
